Writing classes with Belma Michael Johnson at Vitec PDF Print E-mail

Belma Michael Johnson has a great list of accolades and an impressive background in Hollywood. Recently I was fortunate enough to squeeze in two of his classes at the Maui VITEC educational training classes held in Kahului at the Maui Community College Campus. The first was called "Writing from the Heart" and the second was "Hollywood 2.0".

These were exceptionally motivating and I just wish I had been able to take more classes from Belma. I believe he has a lot of knowledge and energy to pass on and it's a shame that only a few are able to partake in the classes.

I've included a you tube link (he needs some updated ones to do him justice), because I think pictures always add to the story and it may not be his best one, but if you have the chance I would look at his site and learn more about him, especially if you are interested in writing and moving from content creation to placing your work directly on the internet and into the hands of the world.

Here is a list of some of his work:

Endangered Pieces PDF Print E-mail

Unexpected Treasures & Unexpected Pleasures

There is a place on Maui where many of the unique and one of a kind treasures end up. Treasures that once belonged to Maui's rich and famous. The place is called Endangered Pieces tucked away in Pukalani.

Most people have probably passed by the little shop located on the Pukalani end of the Makawao Avenue and have seen the strange and wonderful collection of furniture, art pieces and stuff that just defies labeling.

A giant Mardi Gras mask hangs prominently from the front of the store area forever watching as the Maui traffic flows on past it. For those fortunate enough to stop and actually spend some time, it is a rare treat and could easily consume much more time than expected. There is so much to look at and yet it's just the tip of the iceberg!

The owner of the shop, David Rosberg has been collecting the left over "things" that the more "well to do" people of Maui have decided to get rid of. Whether they decided to renovate or sold their property and the new owners wanted to change the look, they call David and he takes it off their hands.

David's inventory may seem big for such a small location, but his actual collection exceeds 11 warehouses and 3 properties.

I have known David for a number of years and bought my first item from him, a burgundy claw foot bath tub, about 5 years ago when most of his collection was spread throughout his property in Kula. Since then David has had a huge store located in Kahului before moving to his present Pukalani location.

I finally took some time to stop by one day as I was running multiple errands and passing by on my way to pick up supplies from Kula Hardware to use in my newest garden venture in Kahului. Although his sign said open, the door was locked, but as luck would have it David pulled up as I was ready to leave. He told me that most of his inventory was housed across the street and in some other warehouses he owned. I went over to take a look, even though my time was running short. Having been to his places in the past, I had some idea of what to expect, but as usual he far exceeded my expectations. If sheer amazement was money, David would be one rich dude.

The collection that I had time to look at and take some pictures of, was only 3 warehouses and a few trailers. In addition he has a vast number of pieces arranged throughout his property. I didn't have the time to even peek into any of the other bigger warehouses. I guess that's an experience I will have to save for another time.

For a look at some of his inventory, I have made a short slide show, well not exactly short, but short enough to take the time to watch. It's uploaded to my EmpowerMaui YouTube site and can be found embedded under this article.

While I would encourage everyone to visit his store, I caution you to build in some time for your trip and bring money! You are going to find many treasures you will want to bring home.

Endangered species is laid out like a museum/amusement park and while David enjoys everyone coming by to browse and be amazed by his collection, he sure wouldn't mind selling you something to add to the uniqueness of your own home.

You probably can't see it all in a day and it may well become your favorite place to spend some time.

It would be a great destination to brighten up the day of friends and family.

Remember that as a community on Maui, we need to help support local businesses like Endangered Pieces in order to continue to enjoy one of the may unique businesses that make Maui what it is. Share this article with others you know and when people rave over your personal endangered Pieces in your home, let them know about David.

This is one little know place on Maui that you should spread the word about!

Willie K was a ray of sunshine at the 2009 Maui County Agricultural Festival that took place on March 14th at the Maui Tropical Plantation located in Waikapu, Maui, Hawaii.

Despite the rain the crowd enjoyed every minute of the Festival this year. They came out in droves and were treated to some exceptional performances by the legendary Maui performer Willie Kahaialii, better known just as Willie K.

EmpowerMaui Community Portal PDF Print E-mail

Aloha,

EmpowerMaui, LLC was formed in an effort to support sustainable and green efforts within Maui County. While we can't ignore our dependence on the rest of the state and our relation to the world, we are a small community on 3 islands within the State of Hawaii. As a community we need to pull together and work in a direction that will allow our island communities to be able to care for our own needs and the needs.

The time has come for each and every one of us to work towards meeting our own energy needs through the use of many types of alternate energy sources and conservation of our existing energy use. There is something each one of us can do today.

We have reached a point where we can no longer depend on unstable supplies for our food. We should not have to settle for a diet of highly processed nutrient deficient foods. We can all be involved in the growing of our own healthy foods, whether directly in our own yards, on a deck or in a community garden. We can gather together with neighbors and farm their yards. If we share the work, we can not only have good food to eat, but help our food budget go a lot further.

Land is a limited resource in the islands and we must stop thinking of it just as a commodity to be bought, sold and developed. We need this precious aina to produce our food. Looking carefully at how we utilize the land and designating it to be used in a proper way is more important than ever.
Water is a finite resource and that becomes all too apparent during our extended droughts. We need to look at not only conservation, but how to produce it from the ocean and air. These are technologies that are available and should be considered. Developing more conventional sources will eventually impact our islands environment.

Education is often forgotten about. We tend to train people and move them into a direction that isn't sustainable. We can only develop a limited number of resorts and housing tracts. We need to move people towards an education in sustainable trades and at levels that a family can afford to live.

  • The Energy field will require many new people and in careers that could look very different from what those job look like today. The area of alternative energy and the developing of a SmartGrid with home automation will require many combinations of highly technical skills. The good news is that most of the younger generation has already acquired many of these skills just by being a part of our high tech culture. It's just a matter of training and moving them into the right direction to use these skills for the benefit of our community.
  • The Agriculture (agri-culture with an emphasis on culture) will require many new people that love to work with the land and are able to learn the proper or "pono" way to farm. Learning to grow and care for our soils is a field in itself. There are many aspects related to farming that can support a workforce. Farming to raise food, grow building materials like bamboo and just caring for the soil are all important jobs and not independent of each other.
  • The Food "chain" from harvesting, transporting, marketing and preparation of food for consumption, has many, many jobs.
  • Maintaining a good supply of Water will require workers and with changes in our thinking and laws, it could even expand.
  • Education is a never ending field and many of us may be called on to lend our knowledge to others. Education should be a right and not just for the privileged.
  • Various other support industries can thrive as we allow our communities to thrive. Maui can be a model, as well as an attraction for the rest of the world. The arts, entertainment, environmental tourism are already a good source of jobs. We all need to play and enjoy our lives as we work to support our families.
  • There are many other areas that impact on our lives daily, but if we can work together to take care of our basic needs and eliminate the fear, stress and anxiety that can happen when these basic needs are not fulfilled, we can drastically improve our whole community’s health.

So it is with this in mind that EmpowerMaui, LLC and through it's websites like this one EmpowerMaui.com, it's educational resource site EmpowerMaui.org, along with being involved in many of our community’s activities and even just growing our own food, that EmpowerMaui is hoping to help be part of the solution.

If you would like to find out ways that you can be further involved, feel free to contact us or one of our fine supporters.

It doesn't matter how much each of us does, just that we do something and now.

Mahalo for what you do!
